All the other pots on the 202 and 404 are fine after a year or two of use, and you can pay a lot more for less-than-perfect quality control (*cough*Apple*cough*).

(3) Full disclosure: my 202 has a slightly noisy/dirty pot on the PC/Monitor fader - I should really have got it replaced immediately, but it's not on any important signal path. The 404 comes with a power adapter (only needed if you want to supply phantom power to more than 2 mics) that keeps the interface powered up and avoids "pops" when rebooting. (1) They do make a loud "pop" when powered on/off - and while I'm sure all good gearheads always remember set the volume to zero before turning on/off, but with a USB-powered device this happens every time you re-boot the computer. I'm using them with line/Eurorack inputs so I can't comment on their merits when used with guitars or mics. I'm sure non-budget alternatives offer slightly superior audio quality to those with golden ears, but the Behringers are perfectly good and great value (especially the 404 f you want 4 inputs). I haven't used them on anything as venerable as Mac OS 10.6 but I can confirm that they are driver free (I've even used the 204 on a Raspberry Pi). Is the Behringer interface as good as it is said, or should I just save for a RME Babyface ?I started with a Behringer UMC204HD and then "upgraded" to a UMC404HD for the extra inputs - I'm almost sorry that I didn't go the whole hog and get the UMC1820 (which has SPDIF by the way) which is still < € 200. So, is there any alternative left for me ? Is the Behringer interface as good as it is said, or should I just save for a RME Babyface ? The only thing missing on the Behringer interface is the SPDIF port (which I never used on my old interface, but who knows ?). This would leave me with the Babyface Pro FS, which is over 700 €, over my budget, and with the Behringer UMC404HD or UMC204HD, which I read is not so bad at all. Then to complicate things, Thomann and other dealers do not carry 1st and 2nd gen Focusrite interfaces new, only the 3rd gens (which is not compatible with 10.6.8).

Pretty much all other interfaces I looked at are not compatible with OSX 10.6.8. Behringer UMC404HD or UMC204HD (which apparently doesn't require drivers for Mac, being class compliant).

So far I came up with these possibilities: My goal was to find a decent budget interface and compatible with an old macbook running MacOSX 10.6.8
